3D Surface Modeling and Compression

As various 3D applications generate large polygonal (esp. triangular) mesh models, efficient compression of 3D models becomes a critical and challenging issue. To address this increasing challenge, new compression techniques specific to 3D surfaces need to be developed. Due to their inherent curvature and non-regular sampling, novel approaches are required to achieve effective compression performance and in particular enable embedded coders.

3D surface generation for point cloud data

UtopiaCompression develops novel 3D Surface Modeling and Compression Technologies which provide both quality-guaranteed triangular mesh surface approximations and compaction of the model sizes by efficiently coding the geometry and connectivity/topology components of the generated models. The highly efficient triangular mesh compression compact the connectivity information while greatly reducing the 3D geometry. The overall triangular mesh compression outperforms the existing mesh coding technique and provides better geometric compression.
