UtopiaCompression develops innovative hierarchical registration technologies to support efficient and effective processing, reconstruction and fusion of 2D imagery and 3D surface data. Our technologies support not only first-pass, batched, fully automatic feature extraction and registration, but also enable the seamless fusion of multi-resolution terrain, image and map data. The efficiency and effectiveness of UC’s registration technologies can be demonstrated by using the following three different application scenarios.

  • Image Querying: Given a base image there is a need to find the exact location of a query image which is a part of the base image but at different resolution and/or different orientation. Such image query problem can be solved using UC’s registration technologies.
  • Image Mosaicing: For fusing data patches, it is often required to stitch overlapping (swaths of) imagery to create a single picture covering a wide field (panoramic) view. The core of the solution to this problem is finding the region of overlap followed by a feature-based registration of the segments. UC’s registration can be applied to solve this problem.
  • Image Updating: Correcting or updating low-resolution or old maps with the help of newly acquired high-resolution data is a very important task as the demand for high resolution digital imagery and terrain data is increasing. Such situations require fusion of datasets with varying accuracy and taken at different time points.
